Awesomed because breakfast is awesome!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we should definitely enjoy the very best Penang has to offer when it comes to it. Listed below are 9 places, all unique in its own way, that we feel everyone should try! Please note, this is only our opinion and so if you doubt us, try them out for yourself and let us know your opinion!

Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect!

1. Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng & Mee Rebus, Seng Lee Cafe – The Legendary Indian Noodle

Specialty: A legendary Mee Goreng stall that’s been around for 80 years

Mee Goreng & Mee Rebus can be found anywhere in Penang but hunting for an awesome one can be quite the adventure. First up on the list is an awesome one that is a favourite of the AwesomePenang team, Bangkok Lane’s store.

You know, we have a saying in Penang: if a stall’s food doesn’t taste good, it’ll be gone in 3 years. This Mee Goreng store has been here for 80 years (that dates back to the 1930’s!), so what do you think?

Our affiliate, Steven Goh wrote a very sterling review on the Mee Goreng & Mee Rebus! Check it out at his site!

2. Oh Lay Ee Hokkien Mee/Loh Mee

Specialty: It’s both cheap and filling, those are a Penangite’s favourite combination.

The ingredients are fresh and the broth has a flavourful taste that will appeal to any “Har Mee” lovers! (Note: Har Mee is another name for Penang Hokkien Mee, as in “prawn mee” in Cantonese.) Notice how the “Hock Kian Mee” also refers to the same thing as shown in the picture below.

If you’re an exercise enthusiast that gets up in the wee hours of the morning or just a person on his way to a very early morning work shift, this stall is for you. Operating as early as 5a.m. in the morning, it’ll definitely cater to anyone’s taste.

Not only does it serve you our Penang famous and unique Hokkien Prawn Mee, you can also add-on other ingredients to make your meal an awesome one!

3. Big Ben Breakfast @ Waterfall Road

Specialty: A unique Western variety for Botanical Garden visitors.

The stuff they serve here is kinda common, yes. But the taste is good and it’s just a great way of unplugging from the busy environment sometimes. Located just outside the entrance of Botanical Garden, Big Ben breakfast provides a different breakfast experience.

Botanical Garden is a favourite spot for many Penangites for their early morning walks or sports, so it comes as no surprise that you will definitely find good breakfast food there! Big Ben not only prepares good and delicious breakfast, it makes sure that it is healthy too!

4. Koay Teow Th’ng @ Taman Sri Nibong

Specialty: Lots of awesome other food stalls in the same coffee shop other than the famed Koay Teow Th’ng

Sri Nibong hawker stall is also a favourite of the team, we visit there often to enjoy not only its famous Koay Teow Th’ng but also its Yong Tau Fu, Wan Tan Mee and much more! The local Chinese style toast is awesome too! It’s a hawker centre that you must visit (mornings only) whenever you can as it truly offers a great selection of awesome Penang food!

Oh, despite being a place with little overseas tourists, usually it’s still packed in the mornings (with locals). And that should tell you something about the quality of the food.

5. Ah Lai Cafe Under the Big Tree

Specialty: More famously known as “Cafe Under The Big Tree”, for its unique location.

*BE WARNED: Many readers complained that Ah Lai Cafe closes on random days. It might be a good idea to have a back-up plan in case they’re closed!

Old Town-style modern coffee houses are popping up at an alarming rate all over Penang, so it’s definitely refreshing to find that traditional and awesome coffee shops like this still exist today. It serves very simplistic breakfast such as eggs and toast and also some varieties of noodles. But really, it’s the style and nostalgia of the place that’ll really grab you 🙂

6. The Cheapest Dim Sum in Penang – Dim Sum Food Restaurant

Specialty: The cheapest dim sum you can find in Penang with outstanding quality, what else can you ask for?

If you’re in George Town and want to try out some Cantonese style Dim Sum breakfast, you should probably check out this place.

What’s next is our Penangite’s favourite Sunday breakfast with our families, dim sum! Being a general lover of dim sum, I’ve visited many dim sum outlets before and normally find myself either disappointed with the taste or shocked by the price. Well, give this place a shot, you’ll definitely come to enjoy it, I know I did.

7. Duck Egg Kaya Toast @ Kopitiam Kheng Hai, Simpang Ampat

Specialty: Uses duck egg in its Kaya, giving it a taste unlike any other.

We’ve all enjoyed Kaya before sometime in our lives, but rarely will you find Kaya made from Duck Egg! This unique blend of ingredients combine to give this toast a unique taste that you won’t be able to find anywhere else.

Make sure to give it a try and let us know how you feel about it! Do note that this is in Butterworth and not on Penang Island specifically.

8. Penang Curry Mee @Lorong Seratus Tahun, George Town

Specialty: Does Penang Curry Mee need any more introduction? This is one of the best. Period.

The broth is very sweet and rich in flavour. This is the perfect curry mee for those who can’t eat spicy food since you can control the amount of chili paste added. Do worth nothing that the chili paste is not too hot for most, too.

9. Tiger Char Koay Teow @ Carnavon Street

Oh yes, we’re guilty of having oily and heavy breakfast. But we just had to include the golden ‘boy’ (food?) of Penang hawker food – Char Koay Teow. Of course, you have other fried koay teow options like the one in Kampung Jawa, or various other nice choices, but one that we really visit frequently in the mornings is definitely Tiger Fried Kway Teow in Kafe Ping Hooi.

We just love the strong ‘Wok Hei’ aromatic taste, plus the juicy prawns, fried with duck eggs till perfection. Judging from the crowd, I guess it’s safe to say that both local Penangites and tourists visiting Penang will eat anything and everything for breakfast, as long as it tastes good. Tastes good, this does.
